Remarks |
Son of Peter and Annie Wood of South Pool. H.M.S. Goliath, was a Canopus class battleship. She had been brought out of mothballs in August 1914 to join the battle squadron operating out of Devonport. Her complement would have been called up from naval reservists who received urgent instructions to report to their depots immediately. After a tour in the East Indies, H.M.S. Goliath was despatched to the Dardenelles to support the landings at Cape Helles. Here she survived damage by Turkish guns on 25 April and 2 May but was sunk by a torpedo boat, Muavent at 1.15am on Thursday 13 May 1915. William died aged 37 and left a widow, Mary Emily Wood, in Dodbrooke. |
